Mike Batt Remembers Drummer Clem Cattini and Their Wombles Connection

Mike Batt has shared heartfelt memories of session drummer Clem Cattini, who passed away recently at the age of 89. Cattini, known for his exceptional drumming skills, collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Paul McCartney, The Kinks, and Jeff Beck. However, Batt’s tribute particularly highlights their work together with the beloved children’s band, The Wombles, which Batt created in the 1970s.

In his social media tribute, Batt reminisced about a different era in music production, emphasizing the importance of skilled session musicians like Cattini. He noted that in a time before digital samples were readily available, having a drummer with impeccable timing and a perfectly tuned kit was crucial. Batt recalled his early days as a producer, expressing how he quickly recognized Cattini’s talent and insisted on working with him whenever possible.

Despite the envy he felt towards session musicians who often enjoyed more commercial success, Batt praised Cattini’s hard work and dedication. He acknowledged that while many session drummers played on hits, they also contributed to countless other projects that didn’t achieve the same level of fame. Batt’s admiration for Cattini was evident as he reflected on their fruitful collaboration, which included many of Batt’s hits and Wombles tracks.

Interestingly, Batt noted that Cattini was often too busy with studio work to appear on popular shows like Top Of The Pops or to join Led Zeppelin as their drummer. However, when the opportunity arose to revive The Wombles in the 1990s, Cattini accepted Batt’s invitation to join the band, resulting in new hits for the group.

Looking back, Batt fondly recalled the humorous moments they shared, including Cattini’s playful antics while dressed as a Womble. Their time together not only produced memorable music but also created lasting memories filled with laughter. Batt’s tribute serves as a reminder of the impact Cattini had on the music industry and the joy he brought to those who worked with him.
