Asia has released their new album, Indigo, which includes a poignant track titled “Tattoo Indigo.” This song holds special significance as it was originally a collaboration between keyboardist Geoff Downes and the late John Wetton, who passed away in 2017. Downes, reflecting on the emotional journey of completing the track, expressed how lost he felt after Wetton’s death, describing him as his greatest collaborator.
Work on Tattoo Indigo began around 2015 and 2016, during the development of what would have been the follow-up to their 2014 album Gravitas. Unfortunately, the project was left unfinished due to Wetton’s illness. Downes felt it was important to bring this piece back to life rather than let it remain hidden away. With the new lineup of Asia, he decided it was time to finish what they had started.
Harry Whitley, who has taken over Wetton’s role on bass and vocals, played a crucial part in completing the track. Downes believes that Wetton would be proud of the final result. The song is infused with a nostalgic 70s vibe, drawing influences from bands like Uriah Heep and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, while also echoing the sounds of The Moody Blues and The Beatles.
In addition to Whitley, the current lineup of Asia features Virgil Donati, John Mitchell, and Downes himself. Mitchell, who previously played in Wetton’s solo band, contributed significantly to the guitar work on the track. The album also boasts guest appearances from former member Steve Howe and Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy, adding to its rich musical tapestry.
Critics have praised Indigo for its ability to resonate with listeners, highlighting the impressive quality of Asia’s current incarnation. The album is now available for fans eager to experience this heartfelt tribute to Wetton’s legacy.
