About the Song
"The One I Love" is a song by American alternative rock band R.E.M. It was released on the band's fifth full-length studio album, Document (1987), and also as a 7" vinyl single in 1987 by I.R.S. Records. The song was their first hit single, reaching No. 9 on the US Billboard Hot 100, No. 14 in Canada, and later reached No. 16 on the UK Singles Chart in its 1991 re-release.
Meaning Behind the Lyrics
Many listeners interpret "The One I Love" as a complex exploration of love and emotional duality. While the title suggests a straightforward romantic theme, the lyrics can be seen as delving into the darker aspects of relationships, highlighting feelings of longing and betrayal. This ambivalence makes the song resonate deeply, as it captures the struggle between affection and dissatisfaction. The juxtaposition of passionate emotions against a backdrop of potential heartbreak invites listeners to reflect on their own experiences with love, making it a timeless anthem that speaks to both joy and pain.
