LUBBOCK, Texas – UTEP’s Martin Simonsen fired a one-under par 70 on the final day of action at the NCAA Lubbock Regional on Saturday. The effort allowed the senior, who wrapped up a fine career with the Orange and Blue with his third trip to Regionals, to vault up 12 spots in the standings and finish in a tie for 22nd.
Overall he carded a three-day even-par total of 213 (71-72-70), which was just one stroke back of tying for the top performance by an unattached individual.
On the final round of action, Simonsen was methodical. He recorded pars on 14 of the 18 holes while using a pair of birdies (one and nine) to offset two bogeys (four and 15).
No. 2 Texas claimed the team crown with a -22 under par 830 while No. 9 Texas Tech, No. 48 Duke, No. 13 Auburn and No. 35 Houston rounded out the top five to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Houston snagged the bid after edging Purdue in a playoff. Louisville’s Robin Sciot-Siegrist advances to the NCAA Championships as well, doing so as an individual.
